Ask Neadom: 5 Reasons Your Computer Is Running Slow
Introduction
Hey guys! Today on Ask Neadom, we’re going to talk about that slow computer that just drives you crazy.
Let’s break down the top five reasons your computer might be running slow—and what you can do about it.
1. Bloatware
If you’ve bought a new computer in the last few years, it may come loaded with what we call “bloatware.”
These are unnecessary software applications—like free trials or old programs—that take up storage and may run background services that slow things down.
On Windows, check the bottom right tray. On Mac, look at the top center of the screen.
Remove old or unused applications to help speed up your system.
2. RAM (Memory)
RAM controls what your computer can do in real time—like switching between documents, emails, and browser tabs.
If you’re a fast worker who multitasks, you need enough RAM to keep up.
Newer programs require more memory, so we recommend at least 8GB, ideally 16GB.
Even laptops can often be upgraded. If you’re running 4GB or 6GB, consider adding more to improve performance.
3. Hard Drive Type and Space
Your hard drive is often the biggest bottleneck.
Older computers may have mechanical drives (spindle drives), which are slower than modern solid-state drives (SSDs).
SSDs come in different formats like SATA and M.2, which affect speed.
Also, low disk space can slow down your system.
Upgrading to a faster and larger hard drive can make a big difference.
4. Internet Speed
Internet speed doesn’t directly affect your computer’s hardware, but it does impact how efficiently you work—especially if your business uses cloud-based apps like Salesforce, Office365, or Google Workspace.
Slow internet can feel like a slow computer.
Use speedtest.net or Google’s speed test to check your connection.
We recommend at least 5MB per user, ideally 10MB.
So a 5-person office should have 25MB, and a 10-person office should have 50MB minimum.
5. Old Computer
This is the number one reason we get calls.
If your computer is old, there’s only so much you can do.
Over time, new applications demand more resources than your system can provide.
Even upgrades like RAM or SSDs won’t help if the machine has reached its limit.
Most computers last 5–6 years. Power users should consider replacing theirs every 3 years.
If your computer is outdated, it’s time to invest in a new one.
Summary
Today we covered the top five reasons your computer might be slow:
- Bloatware and old applications
