When You Need Him: Ask Neadom – Your Computer Needs a Diet

Hey guys, today on When You Need Him: Ask Neadom, we're going to take a diet—for your computer and your IT needs. Stay tuned to figure out what the heck I'm talking about. We'll see you soon.

Welcome

Welcome to another week of When You Need Him: Ask Neadom. Today we're gonna get a little bit serious. We're gonna talk about how your computer—or your IT—needs to go on a diet. Yeah, okay? I'm joking, but you know that when you're going on a diet, one of the hardest things to do is clean your refrigerator out of all the junk. We're gonna talk about that and how it relates to IT.

Make sure you're eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, right? And make sure you get plenty of exercise. That's the thing with every diet or lifestyle change.

Clean Your Refrigerator

So how does that relate to IT?

The big thing is: clean your refrigerator out. When you're using your computers, you want to make sure there's not a lot of junk. Get rid of bloatware.

When you buy a computer from manufacturers, they load a lot of bloatware on there. We talk about that in the first couple of videos we've posted. If you want more information, go back and take a look. Bloatware is basically applications on your computer that don't need to be there. If you're not using an application anymore—uninstall it. It'll slow your computer down. So get that done. Clean your refrigerator out. Clean your PC out. It's a really good thing to do.

Eat Plenty of Fruits and Vegetables

Next: make sure you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

How does that relate to your computer? Make sure you're putting healthy things into your computer. Not opening all the applications. Not all the attachments in emails. Just because you get an email from somebody doesn't mean you have to open it.

Make sure you look at who you're getting an email from. If you don't know the person—delete it. Delete works really well.

Go through your emails. Delete one today. Make sure you have a good email security program that scans those emails before they come in so you don't have to mess with it. That’s a big piece. If we can make sure we're not getting bad things into our systems—like not eating the fat or bad carbs—then we're getting the good stuff: fruits and vegetables. Our computers and our bodies can work better.

Exercise

The third thing: exercise.

When you're out there exercising—for Christmas, my wife was awesome. She got me one of these Samsung watches. I can measure my heart rate, my sleep—all that great stuff. I can monitor what I'm doing. So when I'm exercising, my heart rate is where it needs to be.

We want to make sure we're able to monitor and diagnose your computer. Make sure your hard drive is healthy. Make sure your computer is operating at optimal speeds. If it's getting bogged down, check the RAM.

Make sure your antivirus software is running and turned on. You might have it installed, but there might be an issue. Honestly—how many times have you opened your AV software and asked, “Hey, I wonder if I have a problem?” Most people don’t. But if you’ve got a good IT provider monitoring that for you, you want to make sure you have that.

Then you're going to be healthy, and your computer is going to be healthy. It'll be on its own little diet. Your IT infrastructure will be lean, slim, and functioning operationally. You’ll be able to run that marathon, complete your first Ironman—or whatever—and that equates to increasing revenue in your business.

If your IT is working properly and your computers aren’t going bad, that means your employees are productive. They’re doing their job and making you money. And that’s what we’re here for.
