Ask Neadom: Inside the Sophos XG 750 Firewall – Unboxing and First Look
Introduction
What’s going on everybody? This is Neadom Tucker. Today, we’re going to look at the XG 750 from Sophos.
This is the mothership when it comes to their firewall product lines. It’s the largest appliance they sell.
We’re installing two of these for customers, so we’re going to take a look and show you what’s inside. Stay tuned.
Welcome
Hey guys, welcome back. I’m Neadom Tucker, owner of Kotori Technologies.
I’ve got over 20 years of experience in the IT industry, and today we’re going to take a look inside the box.
We’ve got the XG 750 from Sophos Firewalls. This is their top-of-the-line appliance.
It’s got all the bells and whistles. Let’s take a look inside.
Unboxing the XG 750
This is a big box. It’s heavy and solid.
These are double-boxed, so we’re opening the first box now.
Inside, we’ve got rack rails, power cords, and more rack rails.
We’re going to unbox this and see what’s inside.
Inside the second box, we find:
- Quick Start Guide
- LAN module instructions
- Safety instructions
- Sliding rack rail installation guide
- Sophos orange console cable
- USB modules
- Rack ears and screws
- Serial numbers for documentation
- Optional feet (if not rack mounting, though we highly recommend you do)
The Appliance
Now let’s take a look at the actual unit.
Be careful—this thing is no joke and not cheap.
On the front, you’ll see it doesn’t ship with many modules. These are highly customizable.
Our customer purchased a 4-port 10-gigabit Flexi Port module.
There are two hard drives in a RAID 1 array, USB connections, and a Linux-based OS installer.
On the back:
- Redundant power supplies
- Fans
- VGA connection
- Power switch
- Add-on card slot
- 8-port 1-gigabit interface card
- Management interfaces
- Flexi port module bays labeled A through H
Removing and Installing Modules
To remove a module, unscrew the latch and slide it out like a power supply.
Sophos builds these systems with care and precision.
We’re reinstalling the module now to ensure it’s secure during installation.
Powering On
Let’s power this beast on and see what it sounds like.
It’s loud—definitely server-room level noise.
We hit the red button to silence the alarm while it boots up.
Interface Overview
Once powered on, the system displays a basic menu.
Pressing Enter brings up the main menu:
- System Info
- Network
- Firmware
- HA (High Availability)
In the system menu, you can view:
- Date and time
- Uptime
- CPU and memory usage
- Logged-in users
In the network menu, you can view port configurations.
Ports A1 through A8 are listed, and then it switches to H1 through H4 for the Flexi Port module.
Management interfaces are also shown.
Installing the Flexi Port Module
We’re installing a 4-port 10-gigabit SFP+ module without bypass.
Bypass allows traffic to flow even if the firewall fails—this one does not have that feature.
Inside the module box:
- LAN module configuration guide
- Safety guide
- Quality assurance slip
We’re installing this module into bay H.
After unscrewing the cover, we slide the module into place and secure it.
Once installed, we power the unit back on and verify the module appears in the interface.
Final Thoughts
That’s the Sophos XG 750 with the 10-gigabit SFP+ module.
We hope you enjoyed this deep dive into the unboxing and setup.
