Why Wired Networks Still Matter in a Wireless World
Hey guys! Welcome to another episode of When You Need 'Em, Ask Neadom. This week, we’re diving into the world of wireless technology and answering a common question from our clients:
“Do we still need to wire our buildings for network connectivity?”
The short answer is yes—and here are three key reasons why.
1. Reliability
Let’s start with reliability. Wireless technology has come a long way, but it still has limitations. Originally, most wireless operated on the 2.4 GHz band, which only has three channels in the U.S. That’s like trying to fit 4,000 people into three subway cars—crowded and noisy.
To improve this, the 5 GHz band was introduced, offering more channels and less interference. Think of it like upgrading your cable package to include premium channels. However, higher frequencies like 5 GHz have a harder time penetrating solid objects like concrete walls. So in environments like schools or manufacturing facilities, wireless signals can struggle.
Bottom line: nothing beats the reliability of a wired connection. Plug in a network cable, and you’re good to go.
2. Speed
Next up is speed. Wireless speeds have improved with each new generation—802.11b, G, AC, and now AX (also known as Wi-Fi 6). Wi-Fi 6 can theoretically reach speeds of 3.5 Gbps, which sounds amazing.
But here’s the catch: most business environments won’t see those speeds in real-world use. Plus, as more devices connect, the network slows down. A wired connection still provides the most consistent and fastest speeds for your devices.
3. Density
Finally, let’s talk about density. This refers to how many devices can connect to your wireless network at once. In places like schools, auditoriums, or open office environments, you might have dozens or even hundreds of devices trying to connect.
Without proper planning, this can overwhelm your wireless access points. But with wired connections, you don’t have to worry about that. Plug in and go—no density issues to manage.
Conclusion
So, should your business go all wireless? Not quite.
Wireless is a fantastic add-on to your network, offering flexibility and convenience. But for reliability, speed, and density—wired connections still win.
